I loved the looks of previous generation BMW 5 Series. I liked the treatment given to the headlamps, I liked the back side. I liked the overall stance of the 5 Series. With the new one, BMW has simply made it visually softer. The same is with the 7 Series, only a lot worse. The kidney grills are a couple of sizes too big for my liking which makes it look quite strange, in profile. However, as much as I dislike the BMW 7 Series, I love the Gran Coupe. This, for me, is a properly good looking BMW in a long time.
This is BMW’s answer to the likes of Porsche Panamera, Mercedes CLS and the almost-about-to-be-launched Audi A7. The Gran Coupe is being hailed in the motoring world as the BMW 8 Series. And this got me thinking. You might recall the 8 Series (BMW E31) that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in early September 1989 – it was a 2-door coupe that was capable of doing more than 250kph, courtesy either a V8 or a V12 motor.
Now if history is to be taken as reference, we have a cracker of a car in shape of the Gran Coupe here. I would love to see this translating into reality, for it has everything going for it; and it looks extremely doable with those neat lines and a production-ready shell. Now come on BMW, throw in a V12 and make those Panameras and CLS Mercs sweat!
