The Icelandic volcanic ash, as we all know, caused havoc, directly in Europe, but indirectly all over the world – flights got cancelled, travellers were stranded, meetings were unable to get to and holiday plans remained just that – plans. Now, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano is at peace with itself. The ash has more or less settled down and the world is gaining its normality back. Amidst all the commotion surrounding the volcanic eruption and its dreadful effects, an epic motoring phenomena took place.
Now, if you are a motoring fanatic, you will surely smile when names like Jezza, Hammond and May are said in any or that order. They’re motoring world’s maddest and the most loved (and hated, by some hate-groups) journos. The Top Gear trio went on a polar expedition sometime back, and though they (and me) consider diesel to be ‘fuel of satan’, they ended up driving a Toyota Hilux pick-up truck with a diesel motor bolted on its heavily modified body.
What am I on about? What is the connection of Top Gear with Eyjafjallajokull volcano? There is one. A team of scientists and researchers picked Toyota Hilux as their choice of motoring weapon to conquer the treacherous site of the volcanic eruption. The Hilux was driven to Eyjafjallajokull volcano just hours before it expelled out its anger in form of lava and ash.
Now one needs to understand the topography of the area and understand the magnitude of danger – it’s covered in snow, it’s miles away from any reasonably modest town, and, there’s an active volcano at the verge of going mad! It’s no joke. As the Eyjafjallajokull volcano blew its top, it threw a cloud of ash 30,000 feet into the sky.
The Toyota Hilux SUVs were modified heavily and were almost of the same spec as the one used by Top Gear for its 2009 polar-drive. The vehicles were prepared by specialist firm, Arctic Trucks, and, in addition to the plethora of mods, had massive 38-inch low-pressure tyres. When the entire army of world’s best aircrafts went weak, it was a motoring wonder that stayed in the thick of things. Respect.
