Porsche’s stunning 918 Spyder concept may become reality

Naught to 100kph in 3.2 seconds. Top speed, 320kph. Capable of lapping Nordschleife of Nurburgring in less than 7:30 minutes. Sounds like supercar numbers? They are. Welcome people, to the world of Porsche 918 Spyder. This still-a-concept may well see the light of day. Soon. Wouldn’t that be something! I mean, just look at it. I’ve never really been a great fan of Porsche’s styling department. But this – the 918 Spyder – this looks proper. This look like it means business.

Now, let us talk about something boring, shall we? No, please, we have to. Rather, we ought to, because it beggars belief. CO2 emission standing at 70g/km and fuel consumption of – get this – three litres per 100km. No, I am not talking about a Volkswagen Lupo or a crazy diesel family sedan. I’m still talking about the Porsche 918 Spyder. I know of a guy – a very dear friend – who has forever had a secret fetish for Porsches and has been dreaming of owning one. He’d lick the poster, just to satisfy his libido – that’s how mad he is about Porsches.

He would’ve have owned one, for he is doing well in life. But what has kept him waiting still? The problem is, he would buy it alright – that’s an outright one-time cost. But how on earth would he run it? Damn those fuel bills! Doesn’t it feel amazing when the company pays for your fuel – all of it, no matter how much you use? I know, it does.

Anyway, the point is – now this friend of mine can realistically (sort of, but we’ll get to that later) dream of owning a Porsche, and satisfy his long-time lust. You see, the Porsche 918 Spyder is going to have a hybrid drive. The hybrid drive itself made world debut in March this year.

The powertrain combines a high-revving V8 with electric drive. The IC engine is the evolved 3.4-lire unit that finds itself powering Porsche’s RS Spyder race cars. The V8 motor, it is said, would rev to 9200rpm and develop more than 500bhp. That’s not all. Electric motors, capable of an overall mechanical output of 218bhp, will find place on front and rear axle. Imagine the combined effect of 700bhp, in a car that, I reckon, would weigh in less than hair – it’s going to be colossal!

All that power will be transmitted by a 7-speed Doppel… doppelkupl… doppelkunggit… doppel-lungibe… ah, well, PDK. The PDK transmission will provide power of the electric drive system to the rear axle and the front electric motor will power the front wheels through a fixed transmission ratio. There are four different modes that allow the driver to choose between normal driving to sport and even race mode.

Now, this surely is a proper Porsche, with all those performance oriented numbers and it may well do 3L/100km, so that makes it economical to run. There is a problem still. Wolfgang Dürheimer, board member in charge of R&D said, “If customer feedback is positive and we end up over time with about 1000 firm orders, I would be very pleased.” Porsche has already received 900 orders, so that’s only 100 more to go to make it a production reality!

Now, Pulkit, if you’re reading, I am sure you’re itching to know the price – it is going to be a bit more than Porsche Carrera GT.
